Toby's First Post
Hi, I'm Toby Richkind, a volunteer here with the California Academy of Sciences, in the Digital Learning Science Viz team.
I am a junior at Lick-Wilmerding High School, and I live in San Francisco. This is my third year working at the Academy. I have always loved every subject in school, and my favorite varies from day to day, so today, I will say history! I find history hugely important, as it helps explain why our society and world function as they do. My favorite science topic, however, is probably astronomy, as it deals with and explains the incomprehensible in both a scientific and philosophical way. One of my biggest passions throughout my whole life has been acting and performance, which I love bringing to the science community to help convey certain ideas and topics in interesting and unique ways.
I really enjoy the video below (from the YouTube channel Kurzgesagt) because it uses captivating yet simple visuals to explain complex scientific theories. Furthermore, the length of the video is perfect to express a good amount of information without risking the loss of your audience's attention.

Kate's First Post
Hi, I'm Kate Colebrook. I'm a new volunteer at the California Academy of Sciences. Here are some things about me I'd like you to know:
I'm from Boise Idaho, and I lived there until sixth grade. My mom lives there, and I live with my dad and stepmom here in San Francisco. I'm a senior at Lowell High School. I've been doing theatre for my entire life, and I've loved science since I was a kid- its been my favorite class since fifth grade. At age seven I decided I wanted to be a vet, but now I'm not so sure. I love drawing, writing fictional stories, acting, playing piano, and singing. What I really want to do is to blend my Arts and Science skills, and my desire to help people.
I enjoy this video because Hank Green is very good at explaining interesting, yet complicated, things.

Victoria's First get to know me blog
Hi, my name is Victoria, and I am a freshman at Miramonte high school. Here are a few things about me that you might want to know.
I don't have a favorite subject, but I do have a least favorite one, it's biology. I actually love science but I hate dissections. I am more of a Physics Chemistry girl. I love doing experiments and figuring puzzles. I also like math and european history, (NOT U.S. history). I am also good at writing creative essays, and debates. My favorite hobby is art, I like doing all art especially photography.
Here is a science video that I like.

Emma's First Post
Hi, I'm Emma; a youth volunteer at the Academy of Sciences. Here are a couple of things about me that I would like you to know.
I really enjoy learning about science; my favorite field is biology, but I am taking physics this year. I think it's very interesting how something as simple as objects falling can be interpreted as "science".
I also enjoy dealing with computers, such as programming some games and participating in a robotics club at school.
In my free time, I love writing stories. Whenever I have time, I would start writing a random story about anything that I could think about, since creative writing is one of my most favorite things to do.
I also really love surfing the internet, gaining random facts about celebrities, handy tips for cooking, and watching videos about people creating things (anything actually; I really love watching people make things because they inspire me to try something new.)
In terms of science outside of school, I love learning about the different types of fish, and how evolution caused many species to change overtime. I am the type of person who prefers to go to aquariums instead of zoos, although learning about land animals is quite interesting as well.
I also love learning about the human body; I have always thought it was really fascinating especially I since had a major neurosurgery this summer. :)

Madeleine's First Post
'Sup, my name is Madeleine Valdez. I'm a supes dope junior at California High School that's currently a member of the Science VizTeam at the California Academy of Science. Now, I'm not that awesome, but I can be pretty interesting. Here are a couple (pretty ordinary) facts about me:
I'm passionate about so many things that I end up being a jack of all trades. I love to paint, to write essays, and learn about current events. This year I'm taking a couple AP classes: English 11, Studio Art, and U.S. History. I'm on the Mock Trial team at school. On a regular basis I attend MUN conferences. I also try to look into business and entrepreneurship.
As for science, I really love looking at the structure and function of various critters. How animals and plants fit directly into a particular niche fascinates me, and I love looking at the interactions between ecosystems!

Mark Berman's First Post
Hi my name is Mark Berman and I am a Youth Volunteer for the Academy of Sciences.
My most interesting class in school is history because I like to see the progression of life.
My favorite hobby is go-karting. Ever since I was five, I have been driving a real go-kart in Sonoma at Infineon Raceway. I have always been interested in astronomy and the unknowns of it.

Noah's First Post
My name is Noah, and I am participating in the TechTeens program this year. I am currently a junior at Lowell High School.
My favorite subject in school is chemistry, because I like learning about how the world works from a chemical perspective. I especially enjoy learning about how chemicals can react and form new chemicals - like how two substances that both look like water can be combined to form a cloudy yellow mixture as a result.
When I have spare time, I like to create games or small interactive programs on my computer using various programming languages. Although most of my time goes towards large amounts of homework, I spend extra time dealing with coding or programming video games, as well as playing them.
Apart from chemistry, another science topic I am interested in is biology and the environment. I really like seeing how things can connect to each other, and environmental science is another way to see those connections.
Here is a science video about laziness that I find interesting. Sometimes I can be a very lazy person, and I sometimes procrastinate my work. This video helps explain why that is.
This video comes from the AsapSCIENCE youtube channel, which features short three to four minute videos about various science topics explained in a blog-type video with animations.

Chloe's First Post
Hi! I'm Chloe and I'm currently a sophomore at Lick-Wilmerding High School. Here are a few things that I'd like you to know about me.
My favorite subject in school is history, because I love to learn about how we've gotten to where we are now, and I even enjoy reading non-fiction history books for fun. Because my favorite subject is history, my favorite genre of books are historical-fiction, and I particularly like historical fiction from time periods that I don't know well.
My favorite science topics are evolution in mammals, particularly large, complicated animals as I enjoy learning and discovering why animals posses the traits they do. I think it's really amazing that one can trace certain characteristics of animals through thousands of years to see how they develop.

Introducing Rik from Digital Learning
Hi I'm Rik, senior manager of Digital Learning at the Cal Academy. Here's a few things about me I'd like you to know.
There are lots of things that I'm really passionate about. In school I really enjoy English because I get to read books and stories that I wouldn't normally read. My favorite personal genre is science-fiction. Right now I'm reading the graphic novel "Saga" which is really amazing and "Red Shirts" by John Scalzi which apparently is required reading for a Trek-head like me.
As for science, I'm particularly interested in astronomy, particularly the search for exo-planets and extra-terrestrial life. Basically I'm a big space nerd.
Here's a science video that I really enjoyed. It's called "Dance Your PhD." I love how it incorporates social dancing to describe the search for a cure for cancer, something we all should be excited about.

Oliver Lane First Post
I am interested in making a news report about the unknowns of the world and even the universe. More specifically, space and the ocean. There is so much that is unknown about these subjects, being able to research and investigate what kind of progress is being made in these areas. The great depths of the ocean still have not been charted in full depth, so the diversity of animals and wildlife and the types of landscape that will be found there could be drastically different than what is known currently. Space is another huge topic that has not been fully understood. Knowing more about what really goes on out there would be fascinating.
Some types of media that could be used in these reports could be in depth pictures of these two things, and possibly videos or recordings of different events that go on in the depths of the seas and in space.

What am I Interested in making a news report about?
I am interested in making news reports about things currently happening in the fields of biology and astronomy.
What media would you use in that "report"
I would use Writing Pictures and videos because those are three easy and basic ways to transfer information.
Darrah Bach - 1st Post
I am interested in making a news report about...
- the process that the Academy goes through in order to make new exhibits and update old ones. Who comes up with the ideas? How does each exhibit get decided upon and carried out?
- how species that are living in the same habitat in the academy interact and coexist?
Samuel P's First Post
1. What are you interested in making a "news report" about?
-I am interested in aquatic life, how each animal effects each other (including people).
-I am interested in disease (its effect on humans, animals) and what the outcome of the "outbreak" was.
2. What media would you use in that "report"?
-I would use pictures [including graphs (just maybe)], statistics, writings, and video recordings (maybe audio).
